Joslynn and Charlie Skelton
At 22 weeks gestation, Charlie’s parents were told that their daughter had Hypo-plastic Left Heart Syndrome, meaning she was missing the left side of her heart and her aorta was completely closed off. Charlie has had multiple lifesaving surgeries that reconfigured her heart so the right side does all the work to oxygenate the blood and pump it throughout her body. Charlie will have at least one more surgery to complete this process as she grows.
Through this journey, the Skelton family has learned that Charlie is not alone, since one in every one hundred children is born with a congenital heart defect. The Skelton family have become strong advocates for the heart community and have embraced being a heart family by supporting the AHA and documenting their journey on a community Facebook page called Hearts for Charlie.
Joslynn, Charlie’s mother, will speak about Charlie’s fight for survival and how Joslynn manages to still make her own heart health a priority (and how you can too).
